My favorite part of SexyWhispers is that I get to meet strong sexy women everyday!  More than, I get to interview women who are willing to share their knowledge of sex and sexuality with women across the world.  With a candor of women sharing sex secrets across the coffee table, this week SexyWhispers will celebrate our Orgasmic Christmas contest by interviewing some of the women who are leading their industries and creating innovations for each of us that walks in their sexy stilettos.

To kick our Sexsational Ladies interview series, I had the extreme pleasure of interviewing Claire Cavanah, co-founder of the renowned Babeland.   Thank you Claire…for your time and the strength you show women everywhere…everyday!  ~~Dee

  • What made you want to start Babeland?  My business partner Rachel Venning and I wanted to create a place that we ourselves would want to shop. We didn’t think it was fair that we had to brave the ickiness of the local sex stores just to get a bottle of lube. We lived in Seattle at the time, and it seemed to us that if we wanted a woman-friendly, sex-positive retail store, plenty of other people would probably shop there, too.
  • What is your favorite sex toy? I’m a huge fan of the Magic Wand — the workhorse of our vibrator collection. Where would we be without it? And I find the Gigi totally irresistible. It’s a modern version of the old battery operated vibes. It’s sleek and elegant and rechargeable. I also love the Pure Wand and the other stainless steel toys that have come out recently. I find them very sexy.
  • What question do you get most often from women about sex?  From men?  Answer?  From women, we hear a lot of questions about learning to come during penetration. Most women need direct, reliable clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm, and many times penetration alone doesn’t provide that. The answer to this is — vibrators! And opening up to exploring more positions during sex. The We Vibe, which came out this year, is great for consistent clitoral and G-spot stimulation, and can actually be worn during penetration. That’s a first. Vibrating cock rings can help with this, too.  From men, we hear questions about lasting longer during sex and about the best condoms to protect themselves and their partners without sacrificing sensation. And again, cock rings are part of the answer! Cock rings can delay orgasm and ejaculation, so they’re worth a try. In addition to that, we advise guys that it’s a good idea to try to develop a little bit of control if they can by practicing lasting longer when they masturbate — getting close to orgasm, then backing off. The good news for them is that lasting longer usually comes naturally with maturity. And there are lots of great condoms out there that are either extra thin but strong, or have a balloon-like tip that frees the most sensitive part of the penis from feeling shrink-wrapped. That allows for friction between the skin and the condom. We recommend Kimono Microthin, Beyond 7, Pleasure Plus, Inspiral, and Birds ‘n Bees.
  • Do you feel that women are more or less sexually progressive than they were 20 years ago?  I don’t think they are more or less progressive necessarily, but I think women have a lot more support and freedom to become exactly who they are sexually. Our reproductive rights are more or less intact, and that levels the playing field with men. Women who are progressive and adventurous have a lot more access to more and different kinds of sex and sex toys, and women who aren’t can dabble in sex culture for fun, or leave it alone and find a mate to settle down with. I know the average age for getting married is going down lately. We have a lot more options than we did 20 years ago.
  • What is the biggest sexual event for women in the last 20 years?   I would have to say the long-running, incredibly popular show Sex in the City. It showed four women pursuing sex, having sex and talking about sex for an hour every week for 6 years. It gave a kind of mass media permission for women to talk to each other about their experiences, their desires and needs, their bodies. It helped start a conversation that’s on-going. It had all the same messages for women about appearance and consumer culture (be pretty and thin! buy expensive stuff!) but even so, it had an freeing effect, too.
  • Tell us about something you believed about sex when you were 20 years old that you consider funny now?   When I was 20, I thought porn was for truly deviant sex fiends, and that no woman with any respect for herself would look at it. I thought it was a tool of the man. I marched with my radical feminist sisters against it! I threw my father’s copy of Playboy, the one with Vanessa Williams in it, into the fireplace with the zeal and righteousness of a preacher! Now I sell porn, support simpatico women and men in the industry, and would give anything to get that copy of Playboy back. How things change.
  • What is the biggest myth about sex toys? The biggest myth about sex toys is that they will replace your lover. They won’t. What I find surprising is that this question comes up day after day, year after year. I think it reflects people’s concerns about their sexual performance and overall sexiness, and anxiety about that is common, perhaps even universal!

hotdate300x250Bonus:  What advice would you give a woman looking for her first sex toy?  Go to a retailer where you can speak to another woman. Take your time and do what it takes to feel comfortable. Remember it’s about you and your pleasure! Then start look looking for the toy that’s designed for your purposes — outside stimulation, internal, or both, etc. Mainly, I would advise her to stick to her guns and to keep a good sense of humor.

Orgasmic Christmas:  Have you signed up for my super sexy Orgasmic Christmas?  If not…what vibrating pleasures you are missing!!!  With sexy stuff from OhMiBod, Babeland, Susan Crain Bakos, XToyStore, and JustInCase….winning one of the 11 prizes in the Orgasmic Christmas contest can change the answer to whether you have been “naughty or nice” this year!
