As a mere observer of the outside world, I have noticed that many women suffer greatly from the inability to tell the difference between love and sex.  Although this is not a guarded secret or even an earth shaking revelation, I believe that we have this problem because of the irreverent way that women are raised in society to believe that love and sex are mutually tied up with some romantic bow set around a gold band with diamonds.  Of course, men do not have this issue.  Love and sex are born in two different worlds and satisfy two totally different needs.  These are only stated facts. 

However, there is an ugly unstated fact hidden in the hearts of many women.  It is a secret that we struggle with over and over before either meeting a torturous defeat in pain. 

It seems to me that most women do not seem to be able to tell the difference between “love” and being “in love.”  In fact, we seem to struggle with the ideas of love and “in love” so much more than the acknowledgement of love vs. sex.  Perhaps, in many cases, women struggle so desperately to be “knight on a white horse riding a charging dark horse with rose petals scattered all around” in love that we make ourselves unhappy with or without a partner.  As if the regular old heart rendering love were not enough for us anymore.

Many times in my almost 20 years of marriage, I have either been asked “how do you know you are in love?” or “how do you stay in love?”  I must really look like the village idiot at that point.  As a grammarian, I can tell you that the only difference between being “in love” and loving someone is the matter of a simple preposition.  As a woman and a human being, the difference is as large as the Grand Canyon.

First, I am not the type of person who tosses the word “love” out carelessly.  Sometimes, to others, that makes me seem very cold or distant.  But, I can actually count the number of people that I truly love with four fingers and two thumbs.   I trust these people because they have seen in the “best of time and the worst of times.”  Oddly, they love me back anyway.  For this, I am completely grateful and blessed.

But…being “in love” is a very different thing.  Most women would define being “in love” as that sick, butterfly feeling that causes your stomach to rollover and your body to heat up  like a bad case of the flu when you see a man.  Ummm….nope.  That is a sexual response I am afraid and there is a temporary cure for it.  If we base the feeling of being “in love” on our attraction to another person, then we will, without doubt, loose both the attraction and ‘That Lovin Feeling.’  Instead of wrapping up all of our feelings of love based on fairy tale romances or movie stars who take pretty pictures next to their wife of the moment, we have to look deeper to find the reasons you are “in love” with someone and vow to never loose that which is most dear to you. 

Without seeming too academic, think about the word “in” within the phrase “in love.”  It means you are engulfed, surrounds, and submerged by the things about a person that you really love.  And, if you stop for a moment to consider the things about a person that you really love….and want to hold onto for the long term….it won’t be romantic dinners at quaint restaurants on anniversaries.  It will be the time when he did something silly to make friends with your pet.  Or, the time when he made your mother go to dinner so she would not be alone (and you would not worry!).  Or, when he brought you coffee while you worked to finish something at the last minute.

It could be the way he smiles….or his voice sounds on the phone when he calls just to check on your day….or the way his eyes sparkle when he sees you.

My most recent “in love” moment:  As a night owl, I often go to sleep after The Marine.  The last thing I do every night is stroke his arm and Thank God for him.  A few nights ago, I reached over to touch is cheek instead…and he smiled so tenderly….it touched my heart.  Not the usual sexy smile that I know so well, but the smile of a peaceful 10 year old boy lost happily in his dream.

I went this weekend to see Wanted.  Actually, I would like to say that I was looking forward to it, but it was very much like I expected.  It was all dazzling effects, Angelia Jolie (AJ) kicking the crap out of some guy, and lots of blood.  Now, it seems to be that AJ is a one trick pony.  After all, can you name a movie that you have liked where she was not kicking the crap out of some guy?  Don’t get me wrong…she is a beautiful woman and I respect her intelligence, but represent sexual women….not so much.   I don’t even care at all for her politics and the way she gathers reporters following her around talking about her “baby bump.”  To whoever came up with the delicate words “baby bump” to describe the condition of pregnancy, women should get together and beat the ever living hell out of him.  It, somehow, in my mind, undermines the whole strength women represent in pregnancy.  I digress…

“This is me taking control of my life.  What the fuck have you done lately?”—These words are how the movie ends when the main character discovers that he does not need to just be a cog.  They resounded so highly with me because in the past month I have both struggled with my sexual mission here on SexyWhispers and met some incredible women who are committed to their goals of helping women find their sexuality.  It is an amazing thing to watch women open up when they realize that the subject of sex is not taboo anymore.  It is a breath-taking experience to see a women discover that she has something sexual inside of her that not even SHE knew was there.

You see, this is why I open the SexyWhispers blog up over and over again to all types of women from all walks of life.  Each one of you has experiences that are different from mine.  I am not representative of what all women are…in truth…no women ever will be.  There are many many experiences that I have not had….sexual shoes I have not walked in…..thoughts I have not had.  In the recognition of that, we truly take control of who we are as woman and the power of our group.

“Can a woman turn a man gay?” I blinked once…twice…again at the email in my inbox.  Such a heavy question for 7 simple words.

As you may have read recently, I wrote a rather long winded proclamation about the rights of homosexual couples to marry.  This question, I realize, relates to that post.  However, on a deeper level, it relates to something I think people—men and women alike—struggle through in the acceptance of their sexuality. 

I truly believe that sexuality is something that we are born with in our being.  It is as ingrained into who we are as brown eyes or being right handed.  As I think of how Catholics treated the unpardonable sin of being born left handed in the past, it seems fitting to compare homosexuality with using your left hand instead of your right to pick up a pencil.  Although it may well seem like I am casting humor on this rather deep question, I am.   And, I digress.  Sorry…

In reality, the truth is that we have the right to choose our sexuality just like we choose everything else in our lives.  So many people, when chastising homosexuality as “a disease born of degenerate minds comparable to incest and child pornography” (I really heard someone say this!) forget that homosexuality has been a large part of historical significance since Biblical times. 

But…what I want to make clear is three-fold:

• Sexuality is chosen by each individual person.  There is not a one-size-fits-all sexuality for every person on earth.  No matter what your preference…and yes…heterosexuality is a preference also….it is your God given right to make that choice as it fulfills your sexual needs, passions, and soul.  If you have read SexyWhispers more than once on this subject, then you know I only have three rules—everyone participating MUST be of age of consent, everyone participating MUST give their consent to participate, and if you want to inflict permanent physical harm on yourself or someone else…seek help.  Outside of that, “Laissez les bon temps rouler.” (“Let the good times roll!”)
• Do not carry someone else’s sexual guilt.  People have many many reasons for making the sexual choices that they make in their lives.  Some want to cover up their true desires.  Some want to avoid public exposure or feel more “normal.”  No matter what the case, each person has to carry their sexuality and claim their own actions, feelings, and thoughts.  Do I think that a woman can turn a man gay?  No.  I think you are born with sexual feelings for one gender or the other (or both—in the case of bisexuality).  Masking those feelings with children and a family to fit into the status quo is a deception of the deepest level….unfair to all parties involved.
• There is no such thing as sexually “normal.”  Sexuality is the one place…out of all the places in the world…that normal does not exist.   We apply the word “normal” or “average” to the ideal of sexuality to help us understand the one most transient experience in our lives.  It is the way that we share ideas and experiences—categorizes them into words that show what the masses feel, think, or do.  To be real, sexuality is as individual as a finger print because sexuality is literally the imprint of your soul.   It is worth the effort to find your own sense of the “normal” and get comfortable there.  You will draw people of like mind and sexuality to you…and…possibly…discover…you are not so alone in the world after all!

It really pained my soul to see her email this morning because I thought of the severe guilt someone must carry on their sexuality to need to reach out for understanding.  But, in reality, my first answer must be what it has always been….love yourself….forgive others….and get comfortable in your own skin.  It is often that people make these mistakes because they can’t see past pain of discovery or they think that if they try to fight their sexuality long enough it will just go away.  I have a newsflash for the world.  Sexuality never goes away.  We are born with it and we die with it.  What we do with it in time in between is either our gift or our curse.  ~~Dee

A man and a woman were sitting beside each other in the first class section of an airplane. The woman sneezed, took out a tissue, gently wiped her nose, then visibly shuddered for ten to fifteen seconds. Thinking nothing of it, the man went back to his reading. A few minutes later, the woman sneezed again, took a tissue, wiped her nose, then shuddered violently once more.  Assuming that the woman had a cold, the man was somewhat curious about the shuddering.

A few more minutes passed when the woman sneezed yet again. As before, she took a tissue, wiped her nose, her body shaking even more than before.

Unable to restrain his curiosity, the man finally turned to the woman and said, “I couldn’t help but notice that you’ve sneezed three times, wiped your nose and then shuddered violently.”

“Are you okay?”

“I am sorry if I disturbed you,” she replied. “I have a very rare medical condition - whenever I sneeze I have an orgasm.” The man, although more than a bit embarrassed, was still curious. “I have never heard of that condition before,” he said. “Are you taking anything for it?”

When I first heard that there was going to be a reality TV show, She’s Got the Look, depicting models over the age of 35, I was practically giddy with cheer.  Finally, a show celebrating the sexiness of women over the age of bouncy boobs and 18 year old innocence infected with the “oh no-she-didn’t” attitude.  Strong confident women who had faced the world and come out the other side of the battle with an understanding of self worth, esteem, and bravery fit for a queen.

Women ready to stand before the world in a bathing suit and high heels to represent every woman across America.

As I watched a few shows so far, I learned one thing very quickly.  These women are truly representative of the average woman.  They are beautiful, but no more than any other woman I know.  But, they truly show that beauty is only skin deep.  Things like insecurity, lack of self worth, bleeding self image, damaged self-esteem, and warped sexuality are things all women seem to suffer from on a deeply subconscious level no matter what age.

Perhaps, I am being too judgmental.  I am not really trying to pass judgment on these women who have had the spotlight of national TV shined in their eyes.  But, perhaps that is just the point.  It is easy enough for each of us to look in the mirror and hide the pain of our insecurities behind make-up.  It is easy for women to smile in the face of those few extra pounds or laugh lines of experience when we don’t have some pushing a camera in our face for nude shots.  And, maybe….just maybe….it is easier to be sexy without a group of well meaning people used to the fakery of the beauty and fashion industry dissecting your self image.

I, for one, feel sexy and beautiful after watching this program not for the reason I thought I would…not because these women represented all of the strong sexy confidence of mature women everywhere.  Because, in the best not-Jerry Springer way, I realize that we, as women, share so much more together than just our gender.  At our core, we share the same weaknesses and vulnerabilities that go way past the “Sex in the City” slop that modern media would like us to believe represents us.

It also gives me pause because the epiphany strikes me that if we can share our vulnerabilities, then we can share the strength to overcome them together.  That is what makes the experience of getting older worth it…feeling comfortable in your own sexy skin right?  ~~Dee

Unfortunately for those near and dear to my being, I am known to be neither discrete nor politically correct at any given time.  So, again, I warn the vast public at large…I am about to get controversial.  I wish I could say that it bothered me if others were offended.  The best that I can promise is publish all comments and consider all “rational” discussions without bias as to my own position.

Here is a scary fact.  In the state in which I live, because I am a notary, I can marry people.  Crazy huh?  I always tease The Marine that if times ever get hard I will just down to the local flea market on Saturdays and start a marriage service.  But in truth, to me, marriage is one huge commitment.  Granted…it is not perfect and for some it goes terribly wrong.  Marriage can be the largest pleasure your heart will ever feel.  It can also be the deepest despair your soul will encounter.  And most days, marriage is a stable mix right there in the middle.

When I was married, I vividly remember the words that I promised to uphold:

To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health,
to love, to honor, and to cherish, till death do us part.

These words might seem quite simple, but anyone who has ever been married will tell you…they are not simple at all.  I guess that it why we get married early in life.  Good sense and experience will take the puppy dog innocence away faster than you can say the words “I do.”  With that in mind, it is my sincere hope that people never stop uttering to the words “I do” with the quiet sacred commitment and deep consideration needed to render two beings as one.

All that said, I am having deep trouble understanding the problems heterosexuals have with same sex marriage.  As California removes the ban on same sex marriage this month on the grounds it is unconstitutional to determine the right to marriage based on sexual orientation, I hear time marching backwards as I wonder why it took 7 logical, masterfully educated and experienced people in a 4-3 decision to come to this conclusion.  Sadder yet, it was a close decision.  Even these “impartial parties” meant to administer the Constitution—no input their own values or beliefs—almost could not reach the decision that telling people they could not marry based on gender or sexuality was as unconstitutional as telling people they could not marry based on race or religion.  Once, it was against the law for Germans and French to marry.  As I am German and The Marine French, I can only be glad we are no longer a burden to the morality of humanity at large.

I have heard the arguments against homosexual marriage and they concern me on a deep level.  For example:

• Marriage was meant to produce children.  This is a favorite of mine because I have been married for almost 20 years without any children.  Does that mean I am not legally or morally married?  Does it mean that the thousands of couples that choose not to have children are not legally or morally married?  Should we have to commit to having children as part of our marriage license to get married?  News flash:  There are thousands of domestic partners raising children right now with a grace and bliss that I could not muster.  Shouldn’t we want to teach children instead that marriage is a institution for people that love each other?
• The Bible says….To me, this whole argument is sacrilege of the worst kind.  I believe in God and I am a completely spiritual person.  And, with every part of who I am, I wonder how anyone can look at the Bible with a catch all attachment for the words subscribed to paper by men.  I can easily pull quotes from the Bible that support or deny any position or discussion.  Moreover, I remember a passage that says, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:1-5).
• Gay marriage degrades the sacred institution of marriage between a man and a woman.  Huh?  Not sure how.  I am just as married today as I was yesterday…and will be tomorrow.  The things that degrade the value of marriage in my life are not what others do.  It is what I do myself.  That argument is illogical because it is like saying people who commit adultery degrade the institution of marriage.  Only their own marriage.  My marriage is not at all affected by the way in which others live their lives.
• AIDS / HIV / Disease.  These diseases are spread through sexual contact.  It seems only logical to want sexual partners…no matter their sexual orientation…to practice safe sex.  Or, even better idea, what about a committed relationship that keeps partners together with the shared goals of “forsaking all others?”  I am ALMOST sure I have heard that somewhere before!  Plus, here is a small amount of confusion for the brain.  If domestic partners are allowed to be married, doesn’t that mean they are allotted health care benefits under the law just like heterosexually married couples?

Imagine for a moment…

• Being told that the person you have committed your life to in a legal ceremony is no longer your spouse because the state you live in has annulled your marriage.
• Having to stay in one or two states within the freedom of the best place on the planet—America—to live, work, and raise your children because your marriage would not be legal in any other state.
• Not being able go with your spouse to see the Statue of Liberty, Las Vegas, or Mardi Gras because you are not married if you leave the state you live.
• People hating you because of the person you love and want to marry.
• The state dictating who you can marry.

Now…read the marriage vows again.  I ask  you…what is in those marriage vows that denotes sexual orientation as a consideration for love or marriage? 

One more thing…I can marry people because marriage is not a religious ceremony that requires the ordination of a religious person.  Marriage, by law, is a legal contract between two private parties…much like a business deal with dissolution terms (divorce), the exchange of assets to show good faith (rings), and merging of entities (sex).  It is marriage—not because of the words or the actions.  It is marriage because there is love present.  And, if there is love present, then there are no moral, ethical, or legal power that should denying that marriage.  ~~Dee

As I watched one of my favorite movies, Iron Jawed Angels (which I completely recommend everyone watch at least once), the irony was not lost on me that this movie depicted the battle of women to gain the right to vote in the United States on the day that Hillary Clinton stepped down from her Presidential bid.  The movie is powerful and moving to me.  It may seem odd to others because I was born into a time when women “seem” to have every advantage of our time.

I mean, on the outside, perhaps we are at a higher place than we have ever been in the evolution of women.  In the age of plastic surgery, diets, eating disorders, teen pregnancy, and abuse, it may seem as if our cultural acceptance of women and our sexuality is at a high point, but I truly wonder how far we have come in our struggles to be aware and in control of our own bodies. 

• Never mind that I live in an area where the reason for not voting for Hillary Clinton hinged on the Biblical notation of female submission to men.  I can check that off to ignorance.
• Never mind that in certain places it is against the law to teach birth control or safe sex instead of abstinence.  I can pray for the stupid.
• Never mind that in part of “the home of the free” it is against the law to sell a vibrator to grown women to enjoy in the privacy of her own home.  I can only imagine the day when someone does not feel the need to tell others how they can enjoy their sexuality.

What I can’t forgive is that there were women like Alice Paul and Lucy Burns who fought for our rights to vote…and we waste those rights without consideration of the struggles of the women that made possible each tiny right we take for granted.

News Flash:  Women make 78% of the buying decisions in any household.  We are a major voice in the economic world.  That is why there is such a huge amount of marketing to us!

Yet, the whisper of our political voice tends to remember women as a candidate’s wife or that intern that was wearing the dress splashed with cum that almost got a President impeached (and wasted tons of tax dollars in an “investigation hearing”). 

Really…sexually our world is not what we want because we don’t stand up for what we want. 

• Do you want your teenagers to be told “don’t do it” like sex was dirty? 
• Do you want someone to tell you that you can’t purchase a vibrator? 
• Do you really want your daughter to learn to be submissive to anyone?

I try to remember the comforting words Barbara Feldman wrote in the “Feminine Mystic.”  To paraphrase, she said that women make great achievements, then feel guilty enough to let the next few generations fall back into a lull of complacency instead of pushing forward.  So, there was the right to vote.  A few generations of female guilt.  Next…birth control and divorce.  A few generations of female guilt.

I wish I felt better knowing that the next “few generations” are almost over.  I don’t though.  As I watched confused as Hillary Clinton announced the end to her Presidential bid, I did not feel lucky that she had been allowed to participate.  I felt sorry that so many had voted for her and a few super delegates voted against their own states to pick another candidate.  Again, we allowed men to pick our destiny. 

BTW…it is not historical that an African American man or a woman ran for President in 2008.  It is about damn time!! There is very little to be proud of that we “finally” had non-white, male enteries into a Presidential race.  After all, I remember when Geraldine Ferraro ran for Vice President in 1984.  Did I say a few generations? 

Interestingly enough…all of those countries we consider so backwards and confused…consider the election of a female leader as common as coffee (or tea if you are British!) in the morning.

Could someone wake me when this generation is over?  ~~Dee
