Over the past few months, I have struck stupid by the amount of misplaced items there are in the world. I mean, there seems to be an overflow of things lately that do not fit into any given category for handling the situation. This seems especially true of sex and sex toys. If you live in a world where sexuality and sex toys are easily accepted as an understood portion of life, then when something comes up that does not melt into the reality of the world it seems disarming.
For example, during a recent trip to Dallas, I was caught in the midst of wonder that, in a state where you can easily purchase an AK-47 with several clips of live ammunition for “self protection,” it is still illegal to by a vibrator. So, pain and death are legally acceptable consequences, but an orgasm is not. I have never heard of anyone robbing a store with a vibrator!
Or, in a recent court case in the newspaper, when I found out that you can be arrested for public nudity in your own home if, even without any sexual connotation at all, you are viewable by people passing by. So, if you have ever streaked in front of an open window to the clothes dryer for a clean pair of jeans, watch out for your neighbors because they CAN call the police.
More to the point, the moral implications of a court case of involving several 17 year old girls putting suggestive photos of themselves on their MySpace who have been suspended from school as punishment. I mean, surely an unwise decision on the part of the girls and perhaps a matter for their parents (even though the law sees 17 years old as the age of consent for girls as they deemed adults), but why should their high school become involved in the issue?
As I sat the other night staring at a vibrator that I don’t use anymore, I wondered at the best way to dispose of an old friend. I mean, this is another instance in which society does not prepare for the result in a sexual situation…only punishes the action. There are hundreds (if not millions) of vibrators sold every year. What happens to them?
- Are vibrators recyclable like my plastic bags?
- Is there a trade up program or a new in two contract like with my cell phone?
- Is there a special place at the dump full of vibrating sex toys that need to be disposed of in a special way like cardboard?
- Is there a charity that takes them and refurbishes them for less fortunate women or school programs?
I know…I am being a smart ass, but really…what is a girl to do? There is tons of technology, progress, and pleasure that go into this one little instrument. Every little buzz of pleasure represents years of women struggling to feel and accept their own sexuality. I would not throw out an old blender…so what to do? ~~Dee

Excellent question. We are so weird about sex in this country it defies logic.

Well… it might be the answer for someone who actually pays for new toys ;o)
But according to the promo, they recycle!
You think they’d take donations?

Dick,
I know that I asked, but there is an OHHH factor in there. I would rather use someone elses toothbrush than their vibrator!

Wow, where DO all of those toys go? and its not just vibrators too. There are tons of sex toys – someone needs to start a “toys for twats” program or something

Years ago I watched the film on Larry Flynt and was struck by his comparison between violence and porn. The fact that violence is so publicly accessible, yet he could go to jail for showing porn.
At that stage (and to this day) I have never liked horror movies/ slash movies/ violent endings or torture porn, I have always like porn however.
Living in countries where it has never been legal to own a gun, I’d never considered the gun/sex toy divide, until two days ago and now I’ve seen your blog post. I particularly like the way you’ve phrased it here–
‘So, pain and death are legally acceptable consequences, but an orgasm is not. I have never heard of anyone robbing a store with a vibrator!’
Thank you for this.

Excellently written and it’s so true. How laughable that you can buy an object that could kill a whole classroom yet an object that might actually de stress some of these lunatics is illegal. The law is definitely an ass!
